Our Venerable Father Irodion, Abbot of Lainici

Life

Irodion of Lainici (1821–1900) was a Romanian monk and abbot associated with the Lainici Skete in the Oltenia region. Born in Bucharest and given the baptismal name John, he entered monastic life at Cernica Monastery, where he came under the guidance of Saint Calinic of Cernica, and afterward spent the greater part of his life leading the monastic community at Lainici. He is venerated as a venerable monastic father, and his feast is kept on May 3.

His life unfolded almost entirely within the monasteries of nineteenth-century Romania. Drawn to the ascetic and hesychast tradition cultivated at Cernica, he was tonsured there and ordained, and his career as a spiritual guide became closely bound up with that of Saint Calinic, whom he first followed as a disciple and whom he later served, by tradition, as confessor. He is remembered for a strict ascetic discipline and for a reputation, recorded in local monastic tradition, as a discerning spiritual father.

Monastic Life and Spiritual Fatherhood

Irodion's formation took place at Cernica Monastery, one of the principal centers of Romanian monastic renewal in the nineteenth century. Sources relate that he entered Cernica as a young man and was tonsured there in 1846, taking the name Irodion in place of his baptismal name John, and was ordained to the diaconate and then the priesthood. At Cernica he came under the guidance of Saint Calinic, then abbot, who became his spiritual mentor.

His subsequent life was tied to the Lainici Skete in Oltenia, where he served as the monastic superior. According to the accounts, when Calinic was made Bishop of Ramnic, Irodion accompanied him and took up leadership of Lainici; sources describe him serving as abbot across the second half of the nineteenth century, with several intervals of resignation and reappointment, and credit his administration with the growth of the community. The relationship between the two men is said to have come full circle: the synaxarion tradition relates that Bishop Calinic, his former abbot, later chose the younger Irodion as his own spiritual father and called him the 'Morning Star of Lainici.'

Local monastic tradition remembers Irodion for a rigorous ascetic discipline and for gifts of spiritual discernment, including the reading of thoughts and prophecy. These accounts, transmitted within the monastery, belong to the traditional remembrance of the saint rather than to documentary record.

Relics and Glorification

Irodion was buried at Lainici after his repose in 1900. His relics were later recovered and, according to the Romanian accounts, were located in 2009 and placed at Lainici Monastery for veneration.

The Holy Synod of the Romanian Orthodox Church numbered him among the saints; the canonization is recorded as a synodal act of October 2010, with his commemoration fixed on May 3. The Lainici Monastery in Oltenia remains the center of his veneration.
