Martyrs Stratonicus and Mardonius
Two martyrs who suffered for Christ; their details are not preserved.
The Holy Martyrs Stratonicus and Mardonius
Life
Stratonicus and Mardonius are commemorated together as martyrs on September 30. They appear in the September feast lists of the Orthodox menologion, but the details of their lives have not been preserved: the sources that name them record neither their place of origin, the manner of their suffering, nor the era in which they lived.
Because the tradition transmits only their names and their rank as martyrs, no narrative of their confession or death can be reconstructed with confidence. They belong to the large company of saints whose memory the Church has retained through the liturgical calendar even where their individual histories have been lost.
The Stratonicus commemorated on this day should not be confused with the Martyr Stratonicus venerated on January 13 together with Hermylus the Deacon at Belgrade, who is a distinct saint recorded separately in the tradition.
Stub; distinct from Stratonicus of Belgrade (Jan 13).
