Connection to the Martyrs Epictetus and Astion
Evangelicus appears in the Act of Martyrdom of Saints Epictetus the priest and Astion the monk, who were martyred on July 8 at Halmyris (identified with the modern Dunavat) in Scythia Minor. Within that account he is described as the founder of churches in the province.
The narrative relates that the parents of Astion, having been converted through the preaching of the priest Bonosus, were baptized by Evangelicus at Halmyris some days after the martyrdom of their son. This episode is the principal surviving witness to Evangelicus's pastoral activity.
