Our Venerable Mother Madalberta, Abbess of Maubeuge
Life
Madalberta was a Frankish nun and abbess of Maubeuge in Gaul, in what is now northern France, who reposed in 706 and is commemorated on September 7. She belonged to a noted family of saints: she was a daughter of Saint Vincent Madelgarus and Saint Waldetrudis of Mons, and her brothers and sister were likewise venerated as saints. She is counted among the pre-schism Western saints honored within the Orthodox tradition.
By tradition, Madalberta was educated at the abbey of Maubeuge under the care of her aunt, Saint Aldegund, who had founded the house. There she received monastic tonsure, and about the year 697 she succeeded her sister, Saint Aldetrudis, as abbess of the community. She governed Maubeuge until her death in 706.

A family of saints
Madalberta's parents, Saint Vincent Madelgarus and Saint Waldetrudis of Mons, were both venerated as saints, and according to the tradition all of their children entered the religious life and were themselves counted among the saints: Madalberta, her sister Saint Aldetrudis, and her brothers Landericus of Soignies and Dentlin of Soignies. The sources relate that her father founded the abbey of Hautmont and later a monastery at Soignies, while her mother founded the house that became the abbey of Mons.
Madalberta's formation belonged to this same monastic milieu. Her aunt Saint Aldegund had founded the abbey of Maubeuge, and it was there, under Aldegund's instruction, that Madalberta was raised and later tonsured.
Abbess of Maubeuge
About the year 697 Madalberta succeeded her sister Saint Aldetrudis as abbess of Maubeuge. She led the community until her repose in 706. She is remembered as a patron of the town of Maubeuge.
